1. What Are Valves And How Do They Work?

At their most basic, valves are devices that work to control, regulate or direct flow within a system or process. They often feature a range of characteristics that help to define their ideal application. However, whether you’re looking to control flow, provide safety in a system that is piping liquids, solids, gasses or anything in between, there are likely stainless steel valves available to help.

2. Functions from Valves are..

--Stopping and starting flow

--Reduce or increase a flow

--Controlling the direction of flow

--Regulating a flow or process pressure

--Relieve a pipe system of a certain pressure

There are many valve designs, types and models, with a wide range of industrial applications. All satisfy one or more of the functions identified above. Valves are expensive items, and it is important that a correct valves is specified for the function, and must be constructed of the correct material for the process liquid.

Regardless of type, all valves have the following basic parts.. the body, bonnet, trim (internal elements), actuator, and packing. The basic parts of a valves are illustrated in the image on the right.

3. Types of Valves

In piping following types of valves are used depending on the requirements. The cost of valves in the piping system can be up to 20 to 30% of the overall piping cost. And the cost of a given type and size of valve can vary 100%. It means that if you choose a ball valve over a butterfly valve for the same function. It can cost you more. So, the selection of valves is essential to the economics and operation of the process plants.

Gate Valves1, consists of a gate-like disc, actuated by a screwed stem and handwheel, which moves up and down at right angles to the path of flow. In the closed position, the disc seats against two faces to shut off the flow. Gate Valves are not suitable for throttling service because excessive wear, due to wire drawing (erosion), occurs on the gate and gate seats. They are suitable as stop (or isolating) valves, where conditions require either full flow or no flow. They have the advantage that, when fully opened, the resistance to flow is low with a minimum of pressure drop, as the fluid flow moves in a straight line.

Butterfly ValveA Butterfly Valve is a quarter-turn rotary motion valve used to stop, regulate, and start the flow. The butterfly valve has a short circular body. Butterfly Valvee is suitable for large valves applications due to its compact, lightweight design that requires considerably less space than other valves.

Ball Valvecontains a spherical plug with a passage bored through it which controls the fluid flow through the valves body. The basic type of Ball Valve requires a quarter turn from the fully open to the fully closed position. The valves can be operated by means of a lever, which also serves as an open or shut indicator, or by the use of an automatic actuator.
